THE SCHOOL

ü  Shooter Adam Lanza arrived at the front of school UNNOTICED parking next to a NO PARKING ZONE

 

ü  Principal & psychologist were in a conference room and went to investigate NOISES in the Hallway resulting in their death. They sensed danger as Principal told others in the conference to stay put.  A PHONE in this room could have been used to announce Lockdown situation via intercom

 

ü  Main Office staff heard glass breaking and observed the shooter. Did not secure office doors or initiate lockdown.

NEW FIRST OF ITS KIND NATIONAL PROGRAM TO HELP U.S. SCHOOLS WITH SCHOOL SAFETY PROBLEMS ANNOUNCED

A new national coalition of School Safety experts announced today the development of a “Super School Security Audit” program.

The program brings together a comprehensive auditing of emergency readiness, physical security [cameras, web based security, etc.] and climate assessment [classroom management, leadership evaluations, special education] by experienced law enforcement and education professionals.
“This is the first time that law enforcement and school administers have come together to create a comprehensive auditing process for School Safety, Emergency Response and Education Management”, states SERAPH CEO Dale Yeager.
The new process will allow schools officials to have an audit performed of their policies, training, management systems and security hardware to evaluate whether these systems are preventing safety and security issues.
“Many school districts’ do not have a formal process to accurately assess from a security perspective what is happening behind the scenes of their schools”, says Yeager. “This new process will provide them with accurate information and more importantly solutions to specific safety issues.
The new audit process also provides important documentation for schools to apply for Federal monies.
Yeager says, “The U.S. Department of Education requires climate assessments of Special Education departments and comprehensive assessment of security and safety issues. “Without this examination of their districts they will lose much needed Federal grant money.

EXPERT GROUP RELEASES LIST OF U.S. SCHOOL SECURITY ISSUES FOR 2011

The SERAPH Research Team which provides a biyearly school safety report for Congress has released its “FIVE CRITICAL SCHOOL SECURITY ISSUES list.

The list was developed from interviews with teachers, school security personnel, police and principals from 120 school districts throughout the United States.

  1. LACK OF ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING OF SECURITY ISSUES – Many schools and school districts have performed poor assessments of their school safety as it relates to everyday management of the schools.

Schools have security audits performed which focus on physical security such as cameras and emergency plans. These audits do not address classroom management, sub cultural groups, educational objectives, special education, negative behavior cliques and sexual issues.
