Department of Justice Awards More than $85.3 Million in Grants to Address School Violence

Today, the Department of Justice announced it has awarded more than $85.3 million to bolster school security — including funding to educate and train students and faculty — and support first responders who arrive on the scene of a school shooting or other violent incident.

“These federal resources will help to prevent school violence and give our students the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive,’ said Attorney General William P. Barr. “By training faculty, students and first responders, and by improving school security measures, we can make schools and their communities safer.”

Terror ‘hot spots’ in the U.S.

U.S. Terrorism Hot Spots Map

A study by university researchers on terror attacks in the U.S. between 1970 and 2008 found some areas in the U.S. have remained hot spots for the activity.

The study, Hot spots of terrorism and other crimes in the United States: 1970 to 2008, was released on Jan. 31 by the University of Maryland’s National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START). It said during the last 40 years, terrorist activity of many types in the U.S. has been widely dispersed, occurred in every state, with large urban areas seeing a heavier concentration of the activity. The study said Manhattan, Los Angeles, Miami Dade, San Francisco and Washington, DC, are hot spots for terror activity now and have been in the past.
