Calls for Violence Surge on Social Media: Report

A nonprofit that studies how hate-charged messages spread across social media said in a new report that far-left groups are increasingly using memes and other online propaganda to instigate violence against members of the general public and police.

The report, by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), published on Sept. 14, is titled Network-Enabled Anarchy: How Militant Anarcho-Socialist Networks Use Social Media to Instigate Widespread Violence Against Political Opponents and Law Enforcement (pdf).

It found that anarcho-socialist and violent anarchist online communities have grown in influence in recent years thanks to widespread use of memes as propaganda, spread by means of sophisticated communication networks, and used to organize militias and inspire violence.

Police Families Feel Scared, Alienated

With anti-police sentiment on the rise, Jamie Huppmann is scared her police officer husband won’t make it home from work.

Her husband’s squad car has been vandalized. When she takes her 10-month-old baby for a walk, she sees the stop sign outside her Baltimore home sprayed with curse words directed against police officers.

She has closed herself off from many friends and family members who have expressed contempt for all police following the death of George Floyd in police custody.
