National Stalking Awareness Month

According to results from the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 1 in 6 women (16.2%) and 1 in 19 men (5.2%) in the United States have experienced stalking victimization at some point during their lifetime in which they felt very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed (National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2010 Summary Report, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, November 2011). January 2012 marks the ninth annual observance of National Stalking Awareness Month, a month dedicated to educating the public about the serious and at times deadly crime of stalking.

Congressional School Safety Expert Says School Bus Beating, Evidence Of Poor Management By School Administrators

Dale Yeager a school safety expert says that the recent school bus beating of a 13 year old girl in Marion County School District is indicative of the poor management of students and staff that he sees as epidemic throughout U.S. schools.

Yeager who heads a research team which has provided three reports to Congress on school safety says the lack of training and management is at the heart of school bus related crime.

“Over the last 20 years and 28,000 schools we find a serious issue with the management of staff and students. This is at the heart of crimes such as this one, states Yeager. The dirty secret in American education is that disconnected and lazy Administrators significantly contribute to crimes against students.”

TRUANCY: THE ROOT OF ALL SCHOOL SAFETY PROBLEMS!

“No child falls through the cracks. They are dropped through or shoved through by lazy, emotionally immature adults and unethical professionals”

After the Columbine shootings I made this statement during an interview on national television. The reporter asked if I really believed that statement and I replied, “absolutely!”

But you may ask what this statement has to do with the issue of truancy? Simple, truant children – who are routinely late or absent – come from dysfunctional homes. Those homes in my experience are led by caregivers who are more concerned about their own pleasures and convenience than the welfare of their children. Some may say that this is an unkind assessment. My response to them is simple, visit these homes and you will see that this is not an aberration.

EXPERT GROUP RELEASES LIST OF U.S. SCHOOL SECURITY ISSUES FOR 2011

The SERAPH Research Team which provides a biyearly school safety report for Congress has released its “FIVE CRITICAL SCHOOL SECURITY ISSUES list.

The list was developed from interviews with teachers, school security personnel, police and principals from 120 school districts throughout the United States.

  1. LACK OF ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING OF SECURITY ISSUES – Many schools and school districts have performed poor assessments of their school safety as it relates to everyday management of the schools.

Schools have security audits performed which focus on physical security such as cameras and emergency plans. These audits do not address classroom management, sub cultural groups, educational objectives, special education, negative behavior cliques and sexual issues.
