Robert McCann, School Management & Safety Special Consultant

Robert McCann is a retired school superintendent with 35 years experience as an educator. After college and a four-year enlistment in the United States Air Force, Mr. McCann started his education career in 1972. During that time, Mr. McCann taught sixth grade and middle school mathematics and science. While holding a position as a full time teacher, Mr. McCann also served as the assistant to the administrator. For the next six years Mr. McCann served as teacher and vice principal. During his last nine years at Hamburg, Mr. McCann served as Superintendent. His experience as an educator may be unique since he has spent his entire career in the same school district.

Working in a small K-8 district did offer the opportunity to be personally involved variety of projects and programs such as: test coordinator, Affirmative Action Officer, Right-to-Know Officer, grants coordinator, supervisor building and grounds, and homeless coordinator. Most recently, with a renewed emphasis on school safety, Mr. McCann played a significant role in the development of the school emergency plan, food bio-security plan, and implementation of the Honeywell Notification System. In particular, Mr. McCann was instrumental in the development and installation of school security cameras and the ability to have each camera viewed at the police department and in each patrol car. He has also worked with local police to develop and test school lockdown procedures.

During Mr. McCann's tenure as Superintendent, he played a significant role in the selection of an architect and construction manager for a 20,0000 sq. ft. addition and major renovation project. Working under the restrictions of a very tight budget, Mr. McCann implemented a successful referendum program that resulted in a successful 3 to 1 vote. Mr. McCann also has experience with post-construction litigation.

Mr. McCann worked to foster a positive relationship between all the facets of the school community. In particular, he worked diligently with the local police to include them as part of the school family. This relationship has been formed by mutual support of programs and initiatives, use of local officers as D.A.R.E instructors, open invitations to school events, frequent visits to their office, inviting "anytime" visits/walkthroughs, and simply being a friend.

In support of his profession, Mr. McCann has been a member of the New Jersey Education Association and served as treasure of the local association. As a member of the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA), Mr. McCann served on the Special Education Committee. As a school superintendent and member of the Sussex County Roundtable Association, Mr. McCann held offices as secretary/treasurer, vice president, and president. He also served on the Education Committee of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. McCann has been recognized in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, the Global Directory of Who"s Who, and America's Registry of Outstanding Professionals He also received the "Dale Reinhart Excellence in Education Award" and was recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his work in the interests of veterans and promoting our American heritage.
